I haven't been able to find the words to convey how frustrated I am about the way the media and the public is reacting to my friend's death. Seriously people... I've been holding it in, but it's time, here's my f'n piece:

...Furthermore, and what is really upsetting me, is that Ashlie was a real fucking person - not a statistic, and definately not something that can be categorized. Her death and her character should not be topics that are open for discussion.

What happened is in the past, so please, for the sake of her family, her friends and her loved ones, let's stop treating this situation as an issue that can be rationalized or debated or discussed.

This isn't an issue of right or wrong or if she deserved what happened for being reckless or if she didn't deserve it because she was a good person. None of this is fucking relevent because they are options and we need to focus on the fact that the only relevent and respectful thing to do is recognize that a woman who was loved by this community has passed and that there are a lot of people out there who are still hurting from this loss, myself included, so pay your respects and keep your opinions to yourself.

If you're having trouble doing that, think about how you'd feel if one of your friends passed away, and the entire world was debating the details on the internet for you to see.

Food, Water and Warmth Are Not Enough.

I have taken to late night smokes, wearing my door frame as a coat to shield my body from the night air. And in those moments of quiet reflection, I have found a small creature nudging my bare feet with his nose. And as I kneel down to acknowledge him, I have discovered a longing in his eyes that I never realized had existed before.

Perhaps he finds reassurance in the warmth of my touch, or at the very least, a comfort and connection. He may not be a typical household pet, but he is a being none the less, one that I'm realizing has had his needs ignored more than I prefer to shamefully admit.

I never realized how significant the lack of significant physical contact has been for him and how the psychological stress it has produced has materialized as destructive behaviour. I have not seen one nibbled wall or piece of furniture since I've begun spending quality time with my fine furry friend.

Thank you Harry Harlow. Your experiments in social isolation and maternal separation in animals were not in vain.

Let the internet be my witness, 2010 was a year of growth and maturation. I accepted my position as a member of the Victoria business community, with all of its inherent rights and privileges. I learned to spend time alone comfortably, savouring the moment because less is more. I learned that people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime and in the process, I learned to trust again. I found love in the most unlikely of places. I learned that when you let go of the hate, your enemies can become your friends. I also learned to cuss in Afrikaans. I learned to take the fiery kiss of the steam room into my lungs. I learned to make vegan pesto. Most of all, I accepted the fact that life can work out serendipitously in your favour, if you let it.

Watched Revolutionary Road tonight.

The premise, all too familiar. We've all experienced it, at some point, resigned to our fate, trapped by our situation, our life hinging on a love built on a unfulfilled promise.
The conclusion is ... despair.

Anyways, the resounding apathy I faced upon the credits flashing before my weary eyes, led to a frantic search for answers. Surely there's got to be a way to avoid this destiny...

According to Lucia Van Der Post, there are three crucial needs for a marriage to be successful:

longing for real emotional intimacy
a need for a sense of self worth
a greater possibility of both partners fulfilling their goals in life

We are a world obsessed with boundaries and in the process we have cut ourselves off from each other.

We've lost the emotional connection.

We are distant and in these moments of disconnection, our sense of security is threatened which awakens a primal fear. This panic halts thought and allows action to gain a momentum that escalates and threatens to wreak so much havoc that we may never reconnect again.

We're left chasing the ebb and flow of Passion, because we refuse to admit that we innately need the emotional dependency that is derived from being nurtured, soothed and protected by another.

Because we can not bear the thought that someone may recognize our vulnerability, our "weakness", our need for connection and attachment.

We refuse to acknowledge our hunger for safe emotional connection that is rooted in a survival imperative.

So we place ourselves in self-inflicted isolation and wonder why we are traumatizing.

The solution? The reassurance of physical connection, the reassuring power of Touch.
